The Canadian government detains thousands of people each year for purely administrative reasons related to their immigration status. In the Montreal area, a former correctional facility in Laval is used for immigration detention, as is a provincial jail. Each week, out organization visits individuals and families who are detained at the Laval centre. Improved conditions, however, do not change the underlying reality that people are deprived of their freedom. Detention is still detention.

They will be invited to watch the Windsor Express take on the London Lightning in a National Basketball League of Canada game after the ceremony.

Global News – Arrest of Immigration Consultant Sparks Questions About Why Regulator Didn’t Act Sooner
Artem Djukic’s paralegal licence was revoked in April 2016 when he admitted to “misappropriating” $900,000 from two former clients. At the time, Djukic, 55, was facing 10 outstanding complaints related to his work as an immigration consultant. But four months later, without resolving the complaints, the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (ICCRC) said Djukic could continue working as a consultant so long as he complied with a strict supervisory system. But ICCRC now tells Global News it did not have the authority it needed to properly monitor and investigate Djukic.
