Global News – Trump Administration Moves Toward Requiring DNA Samples from Asylum Seekers

The Trump administration is planning to collect DNA samples from asylum-seekers and other migrants detained by immigration officials and will add the information to a massive FBI database used by law enforcement hunting for criminals, a Justice Department official said. The Justice Department on Monday issued amended regulations that would mandate DNA collection for almost all migrants who cross between official entry points and are held even temporarily.

National Post – Liberals Hold Sway with Heavily Immigrant Community of Brampton East

Liberal newcomer Maninder Sidhu cruised to victory on Monday in the heavily immigrant riding of Brampton East once held provincially by New Democrat Leader Jagmeet Singh. The entrepreneur and father handily beat out his NDP and Conservative rivals to take the seat northwest of Toronto. While economic and environmental issues were a top priority for many voters, immigration and racism were also on their minds. On that score, the Liberals under Justin Trudeau clearly held the edge.

Toronto Star – International Education in Canada Is Booming — But the System Is Flawed. Here’s How to Fix It

A months-long joint investigation by the Toronto Star and the St. Catharines Standard found the explosive growth in the number of international students in Canada, particularly in Ontario colleges, has left students feeling overwhelmed and teachers frustrated. There are now more than 572,000 international students in Canada — the largest cohort ever. That unprecedented growth has proven extremely lucrative. But it has also brought significant challenges.

Global News – Green Party Pledges to Scrap Temporary Foreign Worker Program — Is That a Good Idea?

The Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) has had many problems. This includes allegations from employees who say they have been abused by their bosses, reports of unscrupulous recruiters requiring people to pay for jobs and companies that bring in foreign labour rather than hiring Canadians. For Green Party Leader Elizabeth May, these abuses — and the program itself — have gone on long enough. If elected, she is promising to eliminate the TFWP in favour of increasing the number of permanent economic immigrants Canada takes in each year.
