CBC News – Singh Promises Bump to Quebec’s Immigration Funds to Address Labour Shortage
At an announcement in Drummondville, Que., on Saturday, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh promised to increase the federal immigration transfer payment to Quebec by $73 million per year to improve settlement services for newcomers, if he is elected prime minister. The province has been dealing with a labour shortage, with more than four per cent of all jobs in Quebec left vacant for four months or longer, according to a Canadian Federation of Independent Business report. That’s roughly 120,000 jobs.

Aux deux employés déjà en place dans la région, sept autres viendront s’ajouter prochainement. Trois nouveaux points de services ouvriront à La Sarre, Amos et Ville-Marie. Le ministre de l’Immigration, Simon Jolin-Barrette, croit que ce plan de déploiement viendra en aide aux immigrants et aux entreprises de la région, qui font face à une pénurie de main-d’oeuvre.

Waving Palestinian and Canadian flags, hundreds of Palestinian refugees gathered outside the Canadian Embassy in Beirut on Thursday requesting asylum in the North American country. Many among the group lamented the deteriorating economic and living conditions in Lebanon, which is going through a severe economic crisis, and said they wanted a more dignified life. There are tens of thousands of Palestinian refugees and their descendants in Lebanon.

Forty years after landing in Canada as a refugee, Vinh Huynh is in a position to impact the lives of inner-city children who were once in his shoes. Huynh, now the principal of his alma mater, Gordon Bell High School in Winnipeg, hopes to change students’ lives for the better — the same way his old teachers helped him, beginning with the principal of his elementary school in Birtle, Man. It was there, Huynh says, that principal Bob Marshall’s kindness put him on his career path to become an educator.
