Global News – Federal Court Halts Release of Alleged Online ISIS Supporter

The Federal Court has temporarily halted the release of an alleged ISIS supporter while it reviews a decision ordering him to be freed to a small town in British Columbia. A judge granted the urgent interim stay after the Immigration and Refugee Board said Othman Hamdan could live in Enderby, B.C., with a friend who had agreed to post a $2,000 bond. After IRB member Geoff Rempel’s release decision was handed down late Friday, the Canada Border Services Agency asked the court to delay freeing Hamdan so it could appeal the ruling.

CTV News – Woman at Banff National Park Says Man Told Her to ‘Go Back to Your Own Country’

A female tourist in Banff National Park shot a now viral video, moments after she alleges a man told her to “go back to your own country.” Victoria, who didn’t want to give CTVNews.ca her last name, fearing potential reprisals, posted a 20-second video of the exchange on her Twitter and Instagram accounts, both of which have been viewed 592,000 times combined. “I was just assaulted by a man who first told me to go back to my own country, at Banff National Park,” she wrote in the posts.

In the past eight years, more than 175 people around the world have been killed in at least 16 high-profile attacks motivated, or apparently motivated, by white nationalist conspiracy theories, including the far-right racist belief that nonwhite immigrants and refugees are “invaders” who pose an existential threat to the white race. The targets of deadly attacks have included Muslim worshippers at mosques in Canada, Britain and New Zealand.

CBC News – Judge Passes on Would-Be-Director’s Pitch for Permanent Residency

Aspiring film director Zhiming Wei earned two thumbs-down from a pair of critics whose opinions carry real weight: an immigration officer and a federal court judge. Justice Peter Annis gave Zhiming’s plans to become a self-employed player in Vancouver’s film scene a withering review last week in a rejection of the Chinese man’s bid to overturn an immigration officer’s decision to reject his application for residency.
