Global News – Quebec Court Hears Challenge Against Religious Symbols Bill
A challenge against Quebec’s religious symbols bill was heard by the province’s Superior Court Judge Michel Yergeau on Tuesday. Less than 24 hours after Bill 21 became law last June, a national Muslim organization and several civil liberties advocates launched the court challenge. The National Council of Canadian Muslims and the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA) argue that the Constitution of Canada is bigger than the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and therein sets the rules that apply to public institutions.
Montreal Gazette – Legault to Talk About Economic Immigration at Premiers’ Meeting
Quebec Premier François Legault will be talking about immigration when he attends the summer meeting of the Council of the Federation on Tuesday in Saskatoon. Legault has already called for a common front among the provinces to convince Ottawa to increase the number of economic immigrants to Canada in an effort to counter the country’s labour shortage. At the moment, economic immigration represents 60 per cent of the immigrants arriving in the provinces versus 40 per cent arriving as refugees or as part of the family reunification program.
CBC News – Lies to Clients Put Residency at Risk: Edmonton Immigration Consultant Has Licence Revoked
Immigration consultant Tamara Judge has admitted to unethical behaviour in the cases of Kagabane, Murray and six others who paid for her services. Her transgressions ranged from waiting more than a year to file clients’ immigration applications to not filing them at all. Judge has admitted to lying, telling one client that an MP was actively working on her file. She told another that a “specific person” in the office of the minister of immigration was aware of her case.
