CBC News – Skilled Workers with Job Offers Will Jump the Queue Under Quebec Immigration Reform

Immigration Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette outlined how the government will process applications for skilled workers Thursday, explaining that people already in Quebec and those willing to live and work outside major cities will be given priority to settle here. Jolin-Barrette made no mention of the values test that the Coalition Avenir Québec had proposed as part of its electoral platform.

Globe and Mail – The Foreign Students Who Say They Were Lured to Canada by a Lie

International students say Canadian private colleges use agents working on commission, both here and overseas, who persuade student recruits that paying tens of thousands of dollars in tuition is the easiest way to get into Canada and work toward becoming a permanent resident. In some cases, recruits say they signed up for courses they weren’t interested in or didn’t plan to attend because all they really wanted was a student work permit so they could get a job as soon as they arrived.

Financial Post – Canadian Businesses’ Message Ahead of the Election: We Need Immigrant Workers

Canadian businesses broadly support Trudeau’s promise to boost the number of immigrants and refugees allowed into the country every year to about one per cent of the population. With unemployment at 5.4 per cent, the lowest level since comparable data were first published in 1976, Canada needs workers. A June 25 report showed the country’s farm labour shortage is costing billions and is expected to balloon in the next decade.

CTV News – Russian Student Cries Foul After Denied Visa to Attend Conference in Canada

Marina Dubova was all set for a conference on cognitive science and artificial intelligence in Montreal next month, but was recently informed her application for a visa was rejected. Canadian officials indicated they were unconvinced she would return to her home country at the end of her visit because she has no children, owns no property in her home country and has limited employment. Dubova believes the fact she’s coming from Russia is a major reason why her application was rejected.
