CTV News – Liberal Minister Slams Conservatives’ ‘Half-Baked’ Immigration Policy

Facing questions about the federal government’s handling of asylum seekers and the ongoing irregular border crossings, Hussen defended his approach, while swiping at the Official Opposition’s proposed alternatives. “I haven’t seen anything from the Conservatives, they don’t have a plan. You know what their plan is? To militarize the border,” Hussen said. He went on to say that the Conservatives want border or immigration officials placed along the border where there are no official entry points.

Social workers in Nova Scotia are now required to consider a child’s immigration status when they are taken into care — and can even apply for citizenship on their behalf. The policy changes follow the high-profile case of Abdoul Abdi, a former Somali child refugee who successfully fought to remain in Canada in the face of a deportation hearing last summer.

After a fraught journey from Honduras with his wife and son, the man was about to be put on a bus that would ship him back to the Honduran border — back to mortal danger — for the fourth time.
