A Saudi teen described as a “brave new Canadian” by an official from the government that granted her refugee status as she fled her allegedly abusive family is en route to her new home, Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister said Saturday. Chrystia Freeland appeared alongside 18-year-old Rahaf Mohammed Alqunun with her arm around the teen as she appeared briefly at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport.
Quebec’s Tamil Community is holding a special event on Sunday to recognize their community’s contributions to science, culture and society, both in Canada and abroad, as part of Tamil Heritage Month. Canada is home to one of the largest populations of the Tamil diaspora in the world. In 2016, parliament unanimously adopted January as Tamil Heritage Month in 2016.

Horizons for Youth is a shelter for at-risk and homeless youth that admits people aged 16 to 24. Operations manager Dwight Miller, who has been with Horizons for 13 years, says the shelter has been dealing with a surge in young refugees and asylum claimants over the past several years, and it’s been a strain on resources. That’s partly why Bell Canada presented Horizons For Youth with a $18,500 cheque this week. The money will help the shelter expand its mental health services.
A London non-profit agency that helps newcomers to Canada get a job has been chosen by a national organization to benefit from its expertise. Headquartered on Dundas Street, WIL Employment Connections is one of 10 non-profits, social enterprises and charities from across the country that made a shortlist put together by LIFT Philanthropy Partners in Vancouver. WIL’s purpose is to make sure all immigrants in Southwestern Ontario are successfully employed, said Jennifer Hollis, the non-profit`s executive director.

Highly skilled foreign workers and the American firms that employ them are in a bit of a visa panic. President Trump has vowed to crack down on the H-1B visa program, which allows 85,000 foreigners per year to work in “specialty occupations” in the United States. But there are no new rules yet, creating a climate of uncertainty and fear, particularly in Silicon Valley. Canadian businesses sense an opportunity.
A man at the University of Regina event spoke of “tyranny coming down on us” on the world stage. He added that Christianity and Islam “don’t mix,” a comment that garnered boos from the crowd as the man asked about what he described as an “open border.” “It’s not an open-border policy. We’re not an open country,” Trudeau responded, stressing that the “rule of law” is applied by officials to all immigrants whether they arrive regularly by airport or cross the border from the U.S. illegally.
