Lamine, originaire du Sénégal, a vécu l’isolement dans ses premières années au Québec. Simon et lui ont alors trouvé comment contribuer à rompre cet isolement : faire un Noël interculturel. Une famille accueille un ou deux étudiants internationaux pendant les Fêtes.

The movement emerging in Canada shares iconography with the one in France, but has different motivations, according to Charles Smith, an associate professor of political science with the University of Saskatchewan. “Here it’s a very partisan response to a specific government that western conservatives really, really don’t like.” Smith said. People who attended the rally in Regina on Saturday said they were against Trudeau, the carbon tax and Canada’s plan to endorse the United Nations’ migration pact — which outlines objectives for treating global migrants humanely and efficiently.

Susan Heller’s farm in southwestern Quebec is not far from the ditch at the U.S. border that has drawn international attention with thousands of crossings in the past two years. She volunteers as part of Bridges not Borders, a group of locals who’ve been calling attention to the migrants’ plight. Every Sunday, a few members of the group head to the American side of the border in Champlain, N.Y. to hand out water in the summer and warm clothes in the winter to the dozen or so asylum seekers crossing on foot.
CBC News – Immigrant and Refugee Children at Risk of Health Problems Due to Western Diet
A study at the University of Saskatchewan looked at 300 children between the ages of three and 13 whose families were either refugees or immigrants in Regina and Saskatoon. The study found that children embracing a western diet and lifestyle are increasing their risk of developing health problems within five years of arriving. It found that refugee children were more at risk of stunted growth and high cholesterol while immigrant children were more at risk for obesity.

Justin Trudeau says he’s confident he’ll win re-election next fall by sticking to a positive, thoughtful approach to difficult issues, in contrast to the Conservatives whom he accuses of resorting to bumper sticker slogans that prey on voters’ fears and prejudices. Although recent provincial elections suggest Canada is not immune to the anti-immigrant sentiment or nationalist populist sloganeering that has swept through the U.S. and other countries, the prime minister argues that Canadians are getting wise to political leaders who promise easy, simplistic solutions to complex issues.
CBC News – Group Claims Police Are Improperly Helping CBSA Round Up Undocumented Immigrants
The group No One Is Illegal – Toronto will be at this afternoon’s Toronto Police Services Board meeting to push their case for a don’t-ask, don’t-tell policy in police dealings with undocumented immigrants. The group says it used freedom of information legislation to compile a list of more than 3,200 times Toronto police officers called the Canadian Border Services Agency from November 2014 to June 2015.
