CBC News – Val-d’Or Wooing Immigrants Who Can’t Find Jobs in Montreal
Un emploi en sol Québécois, a recruitment mission, is the local chamber of commerce’s answer to a major worker shortage in Val-d’Or. Qualified immigrants from the Montreal region are flown to Val-d’Or for a tour of the city and a job fair. On this particular trip, 28 people took part in the event. They were recruited through various organizations that help newcomers find work. Now in its third edition, the recruitment effort has helped at least a dozen newcomers find work, said Stéphan Ferron, the head of Val-d’Or’s chamber of commerce.
Abdullahi Hashi Farah had an extensive criminal record, ties to a violent gang, and a long history of breaching probation. But Canadian immigration officials still released him after he crossed illegally into Canada in October 2017. After a Federal Court judge denied the CBSA’s challenge of IRB member Trent Cook’s decision, Farah was released in Winnipeg. Seven months later, on June 11, 2018, Edmonton police arrested Farah in a Walmart parking lot in northeast Edmonton.

Sécurité publique Canada a pris la décision de dédommager les ménages situés non loin du poste frontalier de Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle, en Montérégie, en raison de « l’afflux particulier d’activité près du rang Roxham, relié à l’augmentation du nombre de demandeurs d’asile qui franchissent la frontière dans cette région » depuis avril 2017.

Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale says the federal government has contained the return of foreign fighters to Canada, stating the number has stabilized at fewer than 60 people despite the decline of the Islamic State in the Middle East. There have been strong concerns in recent years about the threat of terrorism posed by supporters of the Islamic State (also known as Daesh) in Canada, including those who were returning to the country after fighting alongside other jihadis.

But if the Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA) has its way, the family of seven, including two small children, will soon be sent back to Colombia — where they say factions of a dangerous paramilitary group want to kill them. The family is set to be deported on Christmas Eve.
