Despite a mild rap on the knuckles from Ottawa, Quebec is steaming ahead with its plan to reduce its immigration numbers by about 20 per cent in 2019. Immigration, Diversity and Inclusion Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette tabled the plan in the National Assembly on Tuesday. It says Quebec will reduce the total number of new arrivals by more than 10,000 a year — from 53,300 in 2018 to between 38,000 and 42,000 in 2019.

La fourchette se situe entre 38 000 et 42 000, avec un objectif de 40 000 nouveaux arrivants.
Researchers at the University of Calgary want to interview refugees who came to the city to escape war and conflict in their home countries. The team is working on a study that could help shape future policy by identifying some of the many challenges newcomers face, along with looking closer at the supports and agencies available to newcomers and how they can be better tailored to help people coming to Canada from post-conflict countries.

Through #ImmigrationMatters, launched in November, the immigration department is inviting the public to submit and share immigrant success stories in their communities, and is posting these accounts on the campaign website and social media outlets. The campaign includes a toolkit to help people find and spread positive immigrant stories with “key messages” to highlight newcomer contributions. People can also order #ImmigrationMatters buttons or business cards for use at local events.
