De nouvelles conférences en ligne donneront bientôt l’occasion aux étrangers comptant immigrer au Canada de découvrir le Nord de l’Ontario. Le projet est une initiative d’Immigration, Réfugiés et Citoyenneté Canada, de la Fédération des communautés francophones et acadienne du Canada (FCFA) et des Réseaux de l’immigration francophone.
La région de Thunder Bay, dans le Nord-Ouest de l’Ontario teste depuis le mois de mars un programme qui permet de former des individus. En retour, ces personnes offrent des services d’employabilité et d’entrepreneuriat aux immigrants.
Canada was the world’s ninth-largest recipient of asylum claims last year with 47,800 claims registered in the year, more than double the 23,600 claims in the previous year, according to the latest annual report from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The new asylum seekers in Canada last year included 7,300 from Haiti, 5,500 from Nigeria and 2,200 from Turkey.

A group of refugee advocates took their message to Canada’s Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Minister Ahmed Hussen on Wednesday. Coinciding with World Refugee Day, the event saw participants congregate outside Hussen’s constituency office in Toronto. They called for an end to the Safe Third Country agreement with the United States, which is based on the assumption that immigration systems in both nations are fair, which is now a major point of contention for critics.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Wednesday the U.S. practice of separating immigrant children from their parents on its southern border was “unacceptable”, even as he resisted pressure to suspend a bilateral agreement designating the United States a “safe” country for refugees. Trudeau has been under increasing pressure to suspend the Safe Third Country Agreement, a 2004-era pact under which asylum seekers presenting at a land border crossing in either country are turned back and told to apply for refugee status in the first country they arrived in.
It was Delveen Al-Naamo’s devoted involvement in the London community that allowed her to finally escape the isolation she felt after fleeing a restrictive lifestyle in northern Iraq. “Before this, I felt very lonely … It’s worth it. Even for one hour a day,” said Al-Naamo, who’s now racked up more than 350 volunteer hours. And for those efforts, the newcomer was awarded the Engaged Refugee Award at the Life As A Refugee Conference on Wednesday, World Refugee Day.
