CBC News – American Sentenced to 90 Days in Jail for Living in Canada Illegally
Eric Michael Bartell, 47, of Delaware pleaded guilty in Summerside provincial court Thursday. Court heard he made repeated attempts to come to Canada legally to be with his wife who lives in Kensington, P.E.I. They met online a few years ago. Bartell was turned away at the border every time he tried to cross because he has 13 criminal convictions in the U.S., court heard. According to documents provided by the Immigration and Refugee Review Board, those convictions are for theft, assault and drug possession.
Global News – Registered Sex Offender Slipped into Canada Through Illegal Quebec Crossing
Adesanya Prince pleaded guilty to child pornography charges Feb. 23 in Houston. He was out on bond awaiting sentencing on May 10, but instead fled to Canada. Prince was detained by RCMP officers as soon as he set foot in Canada. His criminal history was found during a security screening. Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale says Prince’s arrest shows the meticulous nature of the background security checks done by RCMP and CBSA on Roxham Road asylum seekers.
CTV News – U.S. Officials Apologize After Canadian Minister Asked to Remove Turban at Airport
Federal Innovation Minister Navdeep Bains says he has accepted an apology from U.S. officials after he was asked by airport security in Detroit to remove his turban. He told reporters in Toronto on Thursday that he had made it to the gate while boarding his flight in April 2017 when he was asked to remove the turban. He did not comply. Bains had already gone through additional security screen, as per U.S. policy that allows Sikhs to keep their turbans on during airport checks.
CTV News – Quebec Releases Guidelines for Requesting Religious Accommodation
The Quebec government has released its guidelines for requesting and granting religious accommodation under Bill 62, a controversial “religious neutrality” law that prohibits citizens from giving or receiving public services with their faces covered. In December, the Quebec Superior Court suspended the section of the law that dealt with face coverings until the government could establish a clear framework for requesting religious accommodation. Justice Minister Stephanie Vallee released the new guidelines on Wednesday and said they would be applied on a case-by-case basis.
