Seeing the results from their youth work program, Starbucks is launching a new partnership with the Immigrant Employment Council of British Columbia and Surrey Local Immigration Partnership. The program will focus on refugees, with a goal of hiring at least 1,000 newcomers—many of whom will be youth by 2022 in Vancouver and Surrey, where the company has more than 150 stores.
CBC News – Conservatives Demand Liberals Act to Halt Illegal Border Crossings
Conservative immigration critic Michelle Rempel tabled a motion in the House of Commons on Tuesday calling on the Trudeau government to come up with a strategy by May 11 to deal with the spike in migrants crossing the border between legal checkpoints. Rempel said she worries that the absence of a more forceful response from the federal government to illegal border crossings could erode Canadians’ support for immigration.
CBC News – Local Youth Conference Focuses on Refugee Crisis
More than 300 high school students attended the sixth annual Ottawa Youth Conference on Monday to recognize the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Mass Atrocities. Colonel By Secondary School partnered up with Carleton University to host the event which focused on the refugee crisis this year. It was a chance for students to learn from experts who work first hand with displaced people and hear stories from a handful of refugees who have settled in Ottawa.
Chronicle Herald – Immigration Minister Heads Overseas for Doctor Recruitment
Nova Scotia Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab, as well as representatives from the Nova Scotia Health Authority and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia, will head to Dublin on Wednesday, followed by London, before heading back on Sunday. Events will be held in both cities with the aim of attracting more doctors as part of recruitment efforts targeting the U.K., Ireland, Australia and the United States, Diab said. Physicians licensed to practise in those countries have credentials already recognized by Canada.
Global News – Plan to Deal with Surge in Asylum Seekers Coming in ‘Days and Weeks’ Ahead: Ottawa
The federal government says Canadians will need to wait at least a few days — and possibly longer — for a fully updated plan to deal with a renewed surge in irregular border-crossings. Quebec, which has seen the vast majority of those crossings, last week asked Ottawa to step in and help, noting that all four of Montreal’s established shelters were full and its financial resources were stretched thin. After a meeting on Wednesday, the province said it was more optimistic that help from Ottawa was on the way.
