Dozens of Syrian refugees donated blood in Halifax on Saturday as a way of conveying thankfulness for being taken in by Canada. Organizer Mohammad Harb said there were 61 participants in the morning, and more were expected later in the day. Harb, whose family met Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last year, is a Syrian refugee. Donating blood is a moral thing to do, he said. Several donors echoed that opinion, and they frequently mentioned, unprompted, how grateful they are to be living in Canada.

An Edmonton woman is asking the federal government to reconsider its decision to deport her based on the fact she is a lesbian and her home country of Uganda views homosexuality as illegal. Uganda is also known for being a dangerous place for those who are LGBTQ. In 2010, Suzie Kaddu was dating another woman and came out to her parents. She said they tried to convert her into being a heterosexual, even going so far as to marry her off to a man.

Alexandre Bissonnette has pleaded guilty to killing six men and seriously wounding five more in the attack. In an interview with police played at his sentencing hearing on Friday, he said that the final straw came on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017, when he watched news coverage of Mr. Trump’s new anti-Muslim policy and contrasted it with Canadian openness to immigration contained in one tweet seen around the world.

Angelique Reddy-Kalala, the immigration strategy officer with the City of Moncton, said these fairs help newcomers tackle one of the biggest challenges to moving to a new country — building networks that Canadian-born people have from the start.
