The parents of a Chinese immigrant are suing Ottawa over the death of their mentally ill son, who was unrepresented at his admissibility hearing and killed himself hours after he was issued a deportation order. For a dozen years, Shiming Deng’s elderly parents in Beijing have been trying to piece together what happened to the new immigrant prior to his death. They accuse Canadian officials of “intentionally or recklessly” disregarding his mental illness when processing his removal from Canada, claims the government denies.
The federal government has imposed sanctions against a high-ranking member of the Myanmar military under Canada’s new foreign human rights legislation, Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland said Friday. Maj.-Gen. Maung Maung Soe is being targeted for sanctions under the Justice for Victims of Corrupt Foreign Officials Act due to his role in the brutal security crackdown against the Rohingya Muslim minority in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, Freeland said. “What has been done to the Rohingya is ethnic cleansing,” the minister told CBC.

The US Senate has failed to pass any of four proposals on immigration, including protections for young immigrants brought to the US illegally. Support for the most promising bipartisan bill failed after President Donald Trump called it a “total catastrophe” and threatened to veto it. The legislative collapse leaves the status of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (Daca) recipients in limbo. Mr Trump ended Daca and gave Congress until 5 March to find a solution.
In 2011, Canada and Australia relied heavily on immigrants who were admitted based on employability, many of whom were allowed to stay permanently. Both countries used a merit-based point system to determine who qualified, assigning a number of points to criteria such as education, language skills and employment history. Mr. Trump has said that he would like to emulate the Canadian and Australian systems.
