Le président américain Donald Trump se dit ouvert à un processus d’accession à la citoyenneté pour les centaines de milliers de Dreamers, ces jeunes gens arrivés illégalement aux États-Unis alors qu’ils n’étaient que des enfants. En réponse à des questions de la presse, M. Trump a déclaré mercredi soir que le gouvernement « va transformer [le programme supervisant les Dreamers]. Cela se produira, à un moment donné, sur une période de 10 à 12 ans ».

The Government of Canada has invited 2,750 Express Entry candidates to apply for permanent residence in a draw that took place January 24. The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) cut-off score for this draw was 444, a reduction of two points from the previous Express Entry draw on January 10, which had a CRS cut-off score of 446.

Marios Al Bazi, and his family, originally from Iraq, were brought to St. John’s by a group that raised money to sponsor their immigration from Lebanon — where they had lived for the last several years. It’s been a productive two years for Marios, who’s gone from barely being able to speak a word of English to placing fourth in his Grade 6 class spelling bee earlier this week.

A Metro Vancouver woman fighting deportation from Canada claims that if she’s sent back to her native country of Cameroon, she’ll be beaten — and perhaps killed — because she’s gay. Angela is married to her same-sex partner. Her former partner was reportedly detained and beaten in Cameroon, a country where homosexuality is illegal. Jenny Kwan, the NDP’s immigration critic, has been advocating for Angela for nearly two years.
To remedy what their parents, a gay married couple, view as an injustice, Ethan Dvash-Banks became a plaintiff at the tender age of 16 months in a federal lawsuit against the U.S. State Department that seeks the same rights his brother has as an American citizen. Each boy was conceived with donor eggs and the sperm from a different father – one an American, the other an Israeli citizen – but born by the same surrogate mother minutes apart. The lawsuit was filed Monday by an LGBTQ immigrant rights group.
