Globe and Mail – U.S. Data Fuelling Canada’s Crackdown on Immigration Violators

Under a 2011 continental security pact, Canada and the United States agreed to set up co-ordinated systems to track the entry and exit information of travellers. The effort involves exchanging entry information collected from people at the land border — so that data on entry to one country serves as a record of exit from the other. Canada says the information will be helpful in everything from tracking known fugitives to responding more effectively to missing-child alerts. The federal NDP and privacy advocates are watching closely.

CBC News – ‘In the Dark’: Canadian Eyed by CSIS Blocked from Visiting Dying Father in U.S.

In 2014, after years of visiting his family in the United States without incident, the Muslim Canadian learned he was no longer allowed to enter the U.S., where his parents live, his father a green-card holder. While not guilty of any crime, the man says he is no longer treated like an otherwise innocent Canadian citizen — and has no way of knowing whether his border troubles are a result of being on the Canadian Security Intelligence Service’s radar.

CBC News – Liberals Miss Deadline to Resettle ISIS Survivors of Rape, Genocide Due to Flight Restrictions

The Liberal government missed its target to resettle 1,200 Yazidis and other survivors of ISIS in Canada by the end of 2017 because of an extended ban on international flights at a key airport in northern Iraq.

According to figures provided to CBC News from Immigration, Citizenship and Refugees Canada (IRCC), the department has issued just over 1,200 visas to government-sponsored survivors, but as of Dec. 31, 2017, only 981 had arrived in Canada, 81 per cent of them Yazidi.
