Toronto Star – Ottawa Axes $1,000 Application Fee to Hire Foreign Nannies and Caregivers
The federal government published new regulations around hiring foreign caregivers on Wednesday, following through on a budget promise to change a system many felt placed an unfair burden on lower income families. The new regulations apply to those who earn less than $150,000 a year and want to hire someone from abroad to look after their children. Those seeking to hire a caregiver for people with a physical or mental illness will also be exempt from the labour market impact assessment, or LMIA, fee.

Toronto Star – Black Job Seekers Have Harder Time Finding Retail and Service Work than Their White Counterparts, Study Suggests
Black applicants may have a harder time finding an entry level service or retail job in Toronto than white applicants with a criminal record, a new study has found. Janelle Douthwright, the study’s author, created four fictional female applicants and submitted their resumes for entry level service and retail positions in Toronto over the summer. Though the resumes were nearly identical, the white applicant who didn’t have a criminal record received the most callbacks by far.
The Guardian – Call for Syrian Refugees’ Interpreters to Get Psychological Support
Interpreters for Syrian refugees should be given psychological support as a “priority” due to the stress the work causes, according to a study. Researchers looked at how the Syrian Vulnerable Person Resettlement Programme (SVPRP) was rolled out in Edinburgh, as a way to provide guidance for other authorities. Interpreters reported breaking into tears during meetings and suffering bouts of depression as a result of what they were dealing with, often providing help out-of-hours.

True North is a company that works to help employees set up in Canada when they’ve been affected by immigration rules in the U.S. and the Great White North. CEO Michael Tippett, formerly of Hootsuite, told CKNW that True North has helped over 100 clients who want their employees to work in Canada, and there are 30 files still active right now.
