A new facility that will provide shelter and other supports to hundreds of asylum seekers will officially open its doors this weekend, more than a year after it was first promised. The long-anticipated Peel Reception Centre in Mississauga will be located in a converted office building near Dixie Road and Eglinton Avenue, a short distance from Pearson International Airport. The federal government pledged $7 million in funding to help Peel Region open the 73,000 square foot facility back in November, 2023.
A new immigration pilot was announced at Greater Sudbury’s city hall Thursday morning aimed at attracting francophone immigrants, along with the return of a rural program for skilled workers. Both programs are focused on helping employers find the workers they need to overcome labour shortages. Sudbury, Timmins and the Superior East Region were selected to participate in the Francophone Community Immigration Pilot.
Des défenseurs de réfugiés au Canada affirment que ces personnes qui tentent d’échapper à des risques de torture, d’assassinat ou d’autres traitements cruels dans leur pays se sentent coincées dans un différend entre les gouvernements du Canada et du Nouveau-Brunswick. Le gouvernement fédéral, qui accorde des places aux provinces pour qu’elles accueillent des travailleurs immigrants, a annoncé vendredi dernier qu’il réduisait de moitié le nombre de places dans les programmes des candidats des provinces et d’immigration en Atlantique.

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress is warning that many of the 300,000 Ukrainians who arrived in Canada under three-year emergency visas face an uncertain future because their temporary residencies are about to expire. Executive Director Ihor Michalchyshyn says he met with Immigration Minister Marc Miller last week to ask his department to automatically renew the visas for another three years.

L’automne 2024 a été chaud dans l’institution à partir du moment où les étudiants ont été informés que les frais de scolarité augmentaient et qu’ils seraient désinscrits s’ils tardaient à payer leur session. Selon l’Association des étudiants internationaux, le prix d’une session a augmenté de 25 %. Une session pour un étudiant international coûte autour de 14 000$. Au final, une centaine d’entre eux l’ont été le 7 novembre puisqu’ils étaient en défaut de paiement.
