Canada is making efforts to massively increase numbers of Chinese tourists and students as the federal government presses forward its rapprochement with the world’s second-largest economy. “Canada can easily double or triple or quadruple the numbers” of Chinese visitors, Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, said in an interview in Beijing Thursday. And “we’ll do whatever we can” to increase the ranks of Chinese students, who already make up 32 per cent of the international cohort in Canadian schools, Mr. Hussen said.

CBC News – Police Warn of Fraud Scam Targeting Mandarin Speakers in the GTA
Toronto police are sounding the alarm over what they say are a set of fraud and extortion scams targeting the city’s Mandarin speakers. The suspects are contacting victims in the Greater Toronto Area by phone and instant messaging and allegedly posing as Chinese authorities and law enforcement officials, according to a Toronto Police Service news release. The Toronto Strategic Partnership, a multi-agency law-enforcement group that was founded to combat cross-border fraudulent schemes, is working with Toronto police.
CBC News – UNB Project Devoted to Immigrant Retention Gets Big Cash Infusion
This week, the provincial and federal governments announced a combined $400,000 in funding to NouLAB, a joint venture of the Pond-Deshpande Centre and the New Brunswick Social Policy Research Network, to pay for the costs of running the Economic Immigration Lab project. The project is a “social innovation lab” that brings together stakeholders from every sector, including public and private sector officials, academics and immigrants themselves, to brainstorm ideas to increase immigrant retention.
