They’ve poured their hearts, souls and wallets into preparing for the arrival of refugee families on P.E.I., but now all they can do is wait and wonder. It’s been a frustrating experience for some sponsorship groups still waiting to welcome the refugees, says Central Christian Church Pastor Callum Beck. Various sponsorship groups say they are planning to pressure government to do more to speed up the immigration process.

Toronto Star – The Law Says Refugee Claims Must Be Heard in 60 Days. So Why Are People Waiting 16 Months?

A skyrocketing backlog is pushing the wait time for refugee hearings dramatically beyond the federally stipulated 60 days, with recent asylum seekers now waiting 16 months to have their claims determined.

According to the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB), the backlog has been growing at a rate of approximately 1,400 cases a month since January, with the largest increase so far in August with a sudden surge of 3,000 claims.

Reuters – Private Sponsorship of Refugees Grows, Along with Resettlement Needs

Britain and Argentina are among a growing number of countries allowing ordinary citizens to pay for refugee care, lodging and other assistance, as global resettlement needs outstrip places available 13-fold, a Canadian-led initiative said. Ireland, New Zealand and the United Arab Emirates also plan to allow so-called private sponsorship, like Canada, where individuals and organizations can resettle refugees in addition to those brought in by the government, it said.
