The federal government has announced $2.55 million in funding to United Nations agencies grappling with a huge influx of Rohingya refugees fleeing Myanmar in recent weeks to escape what the UN’s human rights chief has called a “textbook example of ethnic cleansing.” The Canadian funding announcement follows an urgent appeal by the office of the UN Resident Co-ordinator in Bangladesh last week, calling for $77 million US to help humanitarian agencies operating in Cox’s Bazar, in eastern Bangladesh, to assist people who have fled violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, where many of the Rohingyas have lived for generations.

A new survey shows that Canadians are equally divided over whether the country should welcome asylum seekers from the United States or close its borders to them. A Nanos poll found that more than one-third of Canadians – 37 per cent – say Canada should welcome asylum seekers from the United States, while the same percentage of respondents think Canada should close its borders; 26 per cent were unsure.
For Mayor Bruno Tremblay, the latest case of hateful graffiti in his Quebec town was the final straw. Sometime on Wednesday, “Ville Blanche” (‘White Town”) was written in red spray paint on the welcome sign in Saint-Honore, a few hundred kilometres north of Quebec City. It is the fifth such incident in the community since July 18.
Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar are facing a catastrophic humanitarian situation, according to the UN secretary general. Antonio Guterres said alleged attacks by security forces on Rohingya villagers were completely unacceptable. The army says it is fighting militants and denies targeting civilians. Some 379,000 Rohingyas have fled to Bangladesh since violence began last month.
