CBC News – 2 Arrested at Anti-Islam Rally in London, Ont.

Police arrested two people Saturday during the largest protest in recent memory in London, Ont., which pitted anti-Islam groups against counter-protesters. A group called the Patriots of Canada Against the Islamization of the West (PEGIDA) had organized the rally on social media. Other far-right groups — including one called the Three Per Cent — had supporters there. Counter-protesters appeared to outnumber PEGIDA supporters about 10 to one.

New York Times – Canada Introduces ‘X’ As a Third Sex Category for Passport Holders

Starting Thursday, Canadians will have a new way to identify their sex on passports and other government documents: “X” will join the options of male and female. The decision to allow the third category, indicating an “unspecified” sex, is intended to protect the rights of Canadians to identify by the gender of their choice, the country’s immigration department said in announcing the change.

Reuters – Canada Ramps up Deportations amid Growing Migrant Influx

As an influx of asylum seekers crossing from the United States strains Canada’s immigration system, the country is ramping up its deportation of migrants, government data shows. Overall, 5,529 people have been deported as of Tuesday, compared to 7,357 for all of 2016, the data shows.

Toronto Star – Quebec Will Hand out Welfare Cheques to About 4,000 Asylum Seekers, Official Says

A spokesperson for Quebec’s employment minister says the provincial government will hand out welfare cheques to several thousand asylum seekers next week. The minimum basic monthly payment will be $623, while there will be an additional sum depending on the recipient’s family status. Once they have received the cheques, the asylum seekers will be asked to leave their temporary shelters and seek permanent accommodation.
