The first vessel — undersized and not built for ocean voyages — laboured toward the B.C. coast in October 2009 with 76 Tamil asylum-seekers onboard. Then in August 2010, a larger ship — but with the same questionable seaworthiness — was intercepted off the coast with 492 Tamil migrants. The Conservative government at the time took an aggressive stance — detaining and building cases against many of the asylum-seekers — as part of a campaign to deter future “irregular arrivals.” A handful of passengers from each ship were also charged with being part of criminal human-smuggling operations.
However, on Thursday, four accused from the Ocean Lady were found not guilty, bringing to seven the total number of acquittals. There has been only one conviction.

The P.E.I. government says four new advisory councils will be announced next week in an effort to help the province figure out how to attract more immigrants to rural areas. Starting this fall, the government plans to change its immigration process, allowing preference for immigrants seeking to establish in rural areas.
CBC News – Financially Strapped Legal Service for B.C. Immigrants Gets Temporary Federal Help
A program that provides free legal services to B.C. immigrants and refugees has been given a temporary reprieve after the federal government provided it with a $386,000 emergency cash injection.
The services provided by the Legal Services Society, wereset to be suspended on August 1st due to a lack of funding. The program is now set to continue until at least mid-November.
