CBC News – Cash-for-Jobs Immigration Consultant Under Scrutiny by Federal and Provincial Officials

The company at the centre of an undercover CBC News investigation, which unearthed evidence of a cash-for-jobs immigration scheme, is now being reviewed by federal and provincial officials.

Since CBC’s stories ran, Vstar has removed reference to its immigration business in Saskatchewan from its website. The matter “is currently being reviewed by Labour Relations and Workplace Safety Program Integrity Unit,” the Saskatchewan premier’s office said in an email, adding that officials are arranging meetings with “organizations” identified in CBC’s stories.

A recent U.S. Supreme Court decision exempting students and faculty from an immigration ban will not put an end to uncertainty or the increased interest in Canadian universities as study-abroad destinations, experts say. The executive orders have led students to seek more welcoming destinations. Canada, with an immigration policy that offers pathways from student to resident status, is near the top of the list.

CBC News – ‘Humiliation Day’: July 1 Has Added Meaning for Some Chinese-Canadians

While July 1 is celebrated as Canada Day, for many Chinese-Canadians it is remembered by another name — “Humiliation Day.” On July 1, 1923, the Chinese Immigration Act or “Chinese Exclusion Act” was passed. The law stopped all Chinese immigration into Canada and divided hundreds of families for years. It was only repealed in 1946.
