Toronto Star – UN Refugee Report Warns South Sudan Could Be Next Syria

South Sudan had the world’s fastest growing refugee population last year and could be the next Syria, warns a new report by the United Nations Refugee Agency. The number of refugees from the fledgling country, established six years ago, spiked by 64 per cent in the last six months of 2016 to over 1.4 million, the majority of them children, according to the refugee agency’s annual global refugee trends report released Tuesday on World Refugee Day.

CBC News – After Fleeing Egypt, Vancouver Migrant Aims to Give Back to Refugees with Coding

Omar Sabry fled his home country of Egypt during the political unrest of the Arab Spring in 2013. Sabry said it was a desperate time, but things started looking up when he signed up for a coding class at the University of British Columbia. Sabry said the skills he picked up in the UBC program — including how to create a website — have helped him as a business owner. Now, he wants to help give other refugees the same opportunity for education he had.

Toronto Star – Refugee Sponsorship Groups Urge Ottawa to Clear Backlog

Andrew FitzGerald of Canada4Refugees, a grassroots advocacy group for the private sponsorship community, made a plea to Ottawa on World Refugee Day: please clear the backlog of the private sponsorship program by June 30, 2018. It’s a demand echoed across Canada by church and community groups, some having been waiting for as many as five years to resettle their matched refugees to Canada for a safe, stable life.
