CBC – Refugees from Central America a Humanitarian Crisis on Canada’s Doorstep, says Aid Agency

Doctors Without Borders says the Liberal government must do something about the humanitarian crisis on its doorstep by making asylum easier for refugees fleeing the northern triangle of Central America. The aid group says an estimated 500,000 people from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala flee into Mexico every year from the three violence-plagued countries, where rates of murder, kidnapping and sexual violence are comparable to those in full-blown war zones.

Windsor Star – Sponsor of 58 Syrian Refugee Families Talks Job Skills, Employment

Guelph businessman Jim Estill couldn’t sit by and do nothing while half a world away, the Syrian civil war and resulting refugee crisis raged on. So the CEO of appliance company Danby decided to sponsor families fleeing the conflict. He started with 50 families, then added a few more. The current tally is 58 families, more than 200 refugees in total. Estill was the keynote speaker at Workforce WindsorEssex’s summit Friday to discuss unemployment and the shortage of people with the skills to fill available jobs.

Toronto Star – Canada’s Turkish Community on Edge as Government Crackdown Continues

Asylum claims have spiked in Canada and some here say they feel threatened by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s purge of thousands of people linked to the Gulen Movement, blamed for a failed 2016 coup. […] According to the Immigration and Refugee Board, the number of refugee claims from Turkey almost quadrupled last year, to 1,106 from just 303 a year prior. Some 82 per cent of the claims were accepted, compared to the 63 per cent average for all refugees.
