CTV News – Family Reunification Lottery had 95,000 Applicants, 10,000 Selected

Of the more than 95,000 people who applied to bring a parent or grandparent to Canada, 10,000 individuals have now been randomly selected under the new family reunification lottery system that some are calling unfair. The lottery system was introduced by the Liberal government as a way of alleviating sponsorship application backlogs under the old, first-come, first-serve system. […] The 10,000 randomly selected individuals now have 90 days to submit their full applications to sponsor a parent or a grandparent.

Reuters – Asylum-Seekers Fleeing U.S. may find Cold Comfort in Canada’s Court

Their time in the United States could count against them when they apply for asylum in Canada, according to a Reuters review of Canadian federal court rulings on asylum seekers and interviews with refugee lawyers. In 2016, 160 asylum cases came to the federal courts after being rejected by refugee tribunals. Of those, 33 had been rejected in part because the applicants had spent time in the United States, the Reuters review found.

Conservative leadership candidate Kellie Leitch is vowing to deport asylum seekers who are caught sneaking into Canada, following a visit to the Manitoba town that’s been a hotspot for border crossers. Toronto Star – Federal Government Urged to Help Roma Refugee CLients of Disciplined Lawyers

Ottawa is being urged to offer redress to the Roma refugees who were the clients of three disciplined Toronto lawyers and subsequently had their asylum claims rejected by Canada.

Now that the last of the three lawyers has been slapped with penalties for professional misconduct over their handling of Roma refugee cases, a community coalition has asked Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen to create a special program to grant permanent residency to their affected clients.
