Une étude du gouvernement révèle qu’une poignée de réfugiés syriens ont payé leurs parrains pour venir au Canada. L’évaluation du programme de réfugiés du gouvernement libéral a interrogé 581 des 8918 réfugiés parrainés par le secteur privé arrivés au pays entre novembre 2015 et mars 2016. Un peu plus de 26 000 Syriens ont été accueillis au pays au cours de cette période.

The federal government is testing a name-blind recruitment process in an attempt to knock down barriers for job-seekers from diverse ethnic backgrounds. Hire A Refugee launched its website in March to help newcomers secure odd jobs. It asks Winnipeggers to consider employing refugees for menial work such as painting, grass cutting, window washing, yard cleanup, moving, demolition, junk removal, house cleaning and office cleaning. Axworthy says so far the not-for-profit group has helped secure jobs for as many as 35 newcomers.

Canada’s withdrawal from the Safe Third Country agreement would be a “clear and easy solution” to the number of people seeking asylum in the country through illegal border crossings, says one advocate. Janet Dench is the executive director of the Canadian Council for Refugees. […] “Unfortunately, the reality around the world is that many times, refugees do have to depend upon smugglers to help them get across the barriers that are put up,” Dench said.

Last month, the federal government promised monthly updates on the numbers of people being intercepted at the Canada/U.S. border. That was after the RCMP and Canada Border Services Agency stopped releasing those numbers, citing inconsistencies in their own record keeping — much to the frustration of local and opposition politicians, and many of the people living in border communities.
