As the debate over the future of asylum seekers in Canada continues, Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen has once again rejected calls to suspend the Safe Third Country Agreement, a pact which considers asylum-seekers to be safe in both Canada and the U.S. “[The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees] supports our position and they’ve said very clearly the U.S. domestic asylum system provides due process both in Canada and the U.S.,” said Hussen while at a citizenship ceremony in Vancouver.

Times Colonist – UVic’s International Students Cry Foul as Fee Increases Approved
Despite pleas to the board of governors, international students at the University of Victoria have been handed a tuition-fee increase twice that given to domestic students. The increases were part of a budget package that was passed in its entirety Tuesday by the board, with a four-per-cent increase for international students and two per for domestic. Students gathered and held signs outside the board’s meeting room at the UVic Centre and sat in during the vote.

Leaders from Central Europe said Tuesday they reject a European Union policy that calls for all member states to take in refugees, protesting suggestions that the level of their compliance could be linked to the availability of EU funds to them.
