CBC – Vancouver Duo Helps find Bikes for Newcomers

A grassroots project in Vancouver is trying to give Syrian refugee families who have arrived in Canada a quintessential childhood experience: riding a bicycle. Lulu Leathley, a Vancouver-based music facilitator, started working with Syrian refugees families last year.  “I talked to a 12-year-old girl and asked her what was one thing you had that was positive for you when you were in the camp in Jordan, and she said I learned how to ride a bike.”

Ottawa Citizen – “It Means Hope”: When Syrian Refugees came to CHEO it Changed Everyone Involved

CHEO has been a key part of the medical response that Ottawa has mounted to last year’s influx of Syrian refugees. More than 2,000 government and privately sponsored refugees from the war-torn country arrived in the city last year, many of them suffering from neglected chronic illnesses, development issues, post-traumatic stress and other ailments. Family doctors, pediatricians and Ottawa’s community health centres have addressed most of the refugees’ health problems; CHEO has dealt with their medical emergencies and complex care needs.
