International students at the University of New Brunswick are praising their school for measures it’s taking in preparation for what they call “the inevitable.” […] There are over 100 people at UNB from the seven countries singled-out in the Trump ban, which is why the university says this time it wants to be proactive for potential students caught in the political crossfire. […] The school says it will treat any applicants who could be affected by the ban as refugees, which will speed up their applications, getting them accepted quicker and waive any initial fees.
Global News – Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale says Manitoba Borders are “Properly Resourced”
Goodale announced $30,000 to cover extra costs borne by Emerson-Franklin’s volunteer fire department and other agencies in the community so far, and said more will be available. The RCMP and the Canada Border Services Agency have shifted some resources in southern Manitoba so that more staff are in the Emerson area. The CBSA recently set up a trailer to help process the border-crossers.
CBC – U.S. Suspends Fast Processing of High-Tech H-1B Visa Applications
Foreigners aiming for temporary jobs at high-tech U.S. companies will undergo a longer visa approval process after the Trump administration announced it will temporarily suspend expedited applications for H-1B visas. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) said on Friday that starting April 3 it will suspend “premium processing” for up to six months. Under this expedited procedure, applicants can be eligible for visa approvals within 15 days, instead of a regular review period that can last for up to a few months.

CBC – Should Liberals let Asylum Seekers from U.S. Enter Canada Safely at Border Crossings?
It was probably unavoidable that when federal bureaucrats met with reporters on Thursday to discuss how the government is handling the growing number of people entering Canada illegally from the U.S. it would boil down to numbers. Officials said Thursday more people made refugee claims at inland points — places other than official border crossings — during the first seven weeks of this year: 2,281 compared to 1,803 during the same period last year. Over that same brief period, 435 people have crossed illegally into Canada and were arrested by the RCMP.
