CBC – Refugee Claims at Canada-U.S Border have Doubled Over Past 2 Years
The number of refugee claims made at the border has more than doubled over the past two years, surging to 7,023 in 2016, according to the Canada Border Services Agency. By comparison, 4,316 people sought refugee status in Canada at land border crossings in 2015 and another 3,747 did in 2014. But the spike isn’t unusual and represents a return to the volume of refugees Canada has previously received, said Janet Dench, executive director of the Canadian Council of Refugees.

But a growing body of evidence details that the stress of these policies severely affects the well-being of Hispanics, and this is not just limited to immigrants at risk of being deported. Immigrants living here legally and even Latinos born in the United States experience high levels of stress due to strict policy environments — and that comes with tangible effects.

Members of the largest Somali community in the United States say they’re not surprised to see a growing number of asylum seekers braving the elements to illicitly enter Canada. They say it is a symptom of the contrast between President Donald Trump’s hardline views on immigration and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s welcoming tone. “Sometimes when you’re left with no options and you’re looking for a better life for yourself, people do take risks,” said Mohamud Noor, executive director of the Confederation of Somali Community in Minnesota. “It will increase rather than decrease … This is not going to reduce.”

About 250 Syrian families have signed up for Ontario Works since the fall, as they transition from federal refugee sponsorship that ends after 12 months to provincial assistance that they’re eligible for at 13 months, said Douglas Bartholomew-Saunders, community services commissioner.
