CBC – Nearly 80% of Refugees Employed within a Year of Landing in Alberta: StatsCan

A large majority of immigrants to Alberta integrate into the workforce within a few years of landing, new data from Statistics Canada show. According to the data — compiled from administrative, immigration and tax records up to the 2014 tax year  — around 60 per cent of refugees that landed in 2014 had employment income. However, that number grows to about 80 per cent for those who had been in the province for a year.

CBC – Canadian Citizenship Applications Decline after Processing Fees Triple

A sharp fee increase has helped fuel a dramatic drop in the number of immigrants applying to become Canadian citizens, according to immigration advocates. In the first nine months of 2016, there were 56,446 applications filed for citizenship, a decrease of nearly 50 per cent from the same period a year earlier, when 111,993 applications were submitted.

Une hausse des frais administratifs exigés pour présenter une demande de citoyenneté au Canada aurait entraîné une baisse significative du nombre d’immigrants présentant une telle demande, selon des avocats spécialisés en immigration. Radio-Canada – Québec veut mieux reconnaître les qualifications des immigrants

Le premier ministre Philippe Couillard affirme qu’il est prioritaire d’accélérer l’étude du projet de loi 98 afin de reconnaître, à leur juste valeur, les compétences professionnelles des immigrants au Québec. En point de presse mardi, Philippe Couillard s’est dit déterminé « à lever ces barrières » qui empêchent les immigrants d’exercer leur métier ou leur profession dans la province.

Justin Trudeau said at a joint press conference in Washington with Donald Trump on Monday that it was not his place to come down to the US and “lecture another country”. At a surprisingly placid joint press conference at the White House, the Canadian prime minister went out of his way to avoid any incidents with a US president, who has already stoked controversy in his dealings with several foreign leaders. […] While Trudeau, who has long been vocal about the need for Canada to welcome refugees, did his best to avoid conflict, he was aided by the American press, who used their two questions for Trump to lob softballs at him.
