CBC – ‘We empower one another’: Winnipeg Restaurant Hires Syrian Refugees

A restaurant is cooking up a recipe for success for Syrian refugees in Winnipeg.

Co-owners Heba Abd El Hamid and Mohammad Naser of Arabesque Hookah Café and Restaurant opened their restaurant three months ago on Corydon Avenue and decided to round out their staff — five people including themselves — with Syrian refugees. “I am a first-generation immigrant and I’m Egyptian ethnically, and my partner is Palestinian and he is a refugee and came from Syria,” Abd El Hamid said. “Both having that newcomer experience, we think it’s really important to give people the chance.

Hamilton Spectator – Couple Accused of Having Fake Marriage — Despite Their Child

Would people go so far as to cheat Canada’s immigration system by having a baby to cover up a marriage of convenience? Three different adjudicators presiding over a Brampton woman’s long-drawn-out spousal sponsorship application apparently think so, even though the couple has a daughter together. Since 2008, Saranjit Kaur Sandhu has made three failed attempts to bring her spouse, Kulwinder Singh Sangha, to Canada from India — twice the Federal Court of Canada overturned the negative decision and sent the case back to the immigration appeal tribunal for reconsideration. “The birth of a child does not definitely prove that a marriage is genuine.

Montreal Gazette – Recruiter Earning Millions from Quebec School Boards to Bring in Chinese Students

For years, cash-strapped Quebec school boards have approached international student enrolment as a promising revenue stream. But it has also been lucrative for one Montrealer who has been paid millions of dollars to recruit students in China for six of the province’s nine public English-language school boards at the same time as they all compete for a piece of the international student jackpot.

International enrolment in Quebec school board vocational programs has surged since the province launched an accelerated immigration program for international students and specialized foreign workers in 2009. The program allows foreign students who complete a vocational, CEGEP or university course in Quebec to qualify for permanent residency without work experience.

Cui Wen (Cindy) Yao has been paid nearly $6.5 million since 2013 by two of the anglophone boards alone — the English Montreal School Board and the New Frontiers School Board, south of Montreal — to recruit in China for their vocational education programs in Quebec. The boards’ payments are going to Yao’s company, Can-Share Connection Inc., which has a contract with the EMSB and a fee-for-service “arrangement” with New Frontiers.

Windsor Star – Windsor Citizens Demonstrate in Solidarity With War-Torn Aleppo

The war-torn Syrian city of Aleppo is more than 9,000 kilometres from Windsor — but that distance didn’t matter to the group of people who gathered downtown to demonstrate on Thursday night. About 50 demonstrators — men, women, and children — endured the freezing cold to chant, hold up placards, and wave Syrian independence flags at the foot of Ouellette Avenue, in a show of solidarity with the civilians of Aleppo. “When you think about those people dying in the worst war circumstances, there is no other option but to come in this cold weather and say, ‘Stop this massacre,’” said Ahmad Chaker of Windsor’s Syrian Canadian Council, one of the supporters of the event.

Metro News – Districts ‘likely in violation’ of B.C. School Act: Lawyer

“It’s definitely not limited to Langley,” said immigration lawyer Laura Best, with Embarkation Law, describing several cases in her law practice of immigrant children being denied B.C. schooling. “It’s frustrating as a lawyer to see discrepancies across different school boards.” This week, Metro investigated the cases of three families in three school districts who, for different reasons, found their children denied a public education over parents’ immigration status.
