BERLIN—The arrest of a 17-year-old Afghan migrant suspected of raping and killing a university student must not be used for “rabble-rousing and conspiracy propaganda,” Germany’s vice chancellor said Monday as a nationalist party argued that the government bears a share of the blame. The teen, who entered Germany last year as an unaccompanied minor, was arrested Friday. The victim, a 19-year-old medicine student, vanished in mid-October on her way home from a party in the southwestern city of Freiburg and her body was found in a river.
Universities and colleges in several US states are considering labelling themselves “sanctuary campuses” amid fears from immigrant students and pressure from activists following the election of Donald Trump. College administrators in New Mexico – the state with the highest percentage of Latino residents – are looking into proposals that would grant immigrant students living in the country illegally protections while they pursue their studies.
A large portion of the more than 180 immigrant detention centres in the US are operated by private contractors. The Department of Homeland Security cast doubt on the future of the private detention facilities in August, when the agency’s security secretary said President Barack Obama’s administration may stop using the facilities to effectively incarcerate immigrants. While Obama deported a record 2.5 million immigrants between 2009 and 2015, Donald Trump has vowed to deport up to three million.
