Angela Vint sits in the Petrolia public library on a Wednesday afternoon drawing an outline of the world’s continents. She’s here to welcome newcomers into the community, including immigrants and refugees from across the globe. This is Vint’s third year working with the YMCA’s Newcomer, Immigrant and Refugee Centre located in Sarnia. Her job as a settlement worker has a wide array of functions, from helping families find affordable housing, to enrolling newcomers in ESL classes. She comes to Petrolia monthly so families living in rural areas can access their services.
Thunder Bay Newswatch – International Students Make Thunder Bay Home
Schools in Thunder Bay are reaching out across borders to attract students from around the world to Thunder Bay. The Lakehead Public School Board launched a new program, Lakehead Public Schools International, which aims to recruit international students. Within five years, the program is hoping to recruit 50 students. My-Tien Nguyen, international student coordinator with the Lakehead Public School Board, will be travelling to Vietnam and South Korea next week to take part in various international recruitment fairs. Nguyen said it is important for the school board to travel to these countries because there is so much competition in Canada when it comes to international recruitment.

Kuet now mentors immigrant and refugee youth. He says problems begin when the kids who don’t speak English enter English-speaking classrooms. Some school-aged children never had the opportunity to attend school before getting placed among Canadian students who’ve passed every grade since kindergarten. Some refugee children fall behind, some get bullied and some feel teachers don’t care about their struggles, he said.

After fleeing conflict, abject poverty or persecution in their homelands, new refugees will be asked to repay their travel costs to Canada under a federal loan policy one advocate calls “inhumane.” The Immigration Loan Program provides individuals and families money to cover costs of medical exams, travel documents and transportation to Canada.
CBC – Fliss Cramman Saved from Deportation to U.K. by Federal Order
The 33-year-old woman, who came to Canada at the age of eight, was facing deportation from Canada as early as Dec. 16 due to convictions for drug trafficking, break and enter and possessing stolen property. […] On Friday, Immigration Minister John McCallum intervened in her case on compassionate grounds, according to her lawyer, John O’Neill, and Emma Halpern, a lawyer with the Elizabeth Fry Society. In what they call an unprecedented move, McCallum ordered Cramman’s Canadian permanent residency status to be immediately restored and for her to be released from immigration custody.
