Radio Canada International – Immigration Detainee Hunger Strike in Ontario Jail goes into Third Week

A group of immigration detainees at the Central East Correctional Centre (CECC) in Lindsay, Ontario, have been on a hunger strike for over two weeks to protest Canada’s immigration detention system, says a migrants’ rights advocacy group. Eighteen immigration detainees at the maximum security provincial prison located about 125 km northeast of Toronto began refusing meals on Oct. 17 to demand legislative changes to federal immigration rules that allow Canadian authorities to detain certain immigrants for an indefinite period, said Macdonald Scott, an immigration consultant with the Toronto law firm Carranza LLP.

Metro News – Syrian Refugee Helping Study Refugee Experiences for Federal Government

Aref Sayegh is helping those who share his experience as a Syrian refugee in Canada by helping the University of Alberta study them. […] Sandeep Agrawal, an urban planning professor at the university, is about to study the settlement process of Syrian refugees by focusing on those who have settled in Edmonton and Lethbridge. Agrawal has added Sayegh to the project as an intern to help with cultural and language support.

The Globe and Mail – Ottawa Unveils Strategy to Court Foreign Tech Talent

The federal government is rolling out measures to lure more foreign cash and talent to Canada as it tries to dig the country out of a slow-growth trap. The strategy, unveiled Tuesday by Finance Minister Bill Morneau, includes measures that will make it easier for fast-growing Canadian tech firms and multinational corporations operating here to quickly bring in skilled foreign workers for jobs they are struggling to fill in Canada.

Radio-Canada – Immigration francophone : les chiffres se maintiennent, mais loin des 7% souhaités

Le Manitoba accueille plus de 400 immigrants francophones chaque année depuis le début des années 2010. Ces chiffres, toutefois, n’ont jamais dépassé 4 % du nombre total d’immigrants qui s’installent dans la province. Un taux qui reste loin de la cible de 7 %, établie par la province et la communauté il y a dix ans.
