Refugees sponsored by community groups do better than government-assisted ones with fewer relying on food banks and social assistance, an evaluation of Canada’s much heralded resettlement program shows. Some 65 per cent of government-assisted refugees reported using food banks, compared to only 29 per cent of their privately sponsored counterparts, according to the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada report released this week.

The St. John’s-based Refugee and Immigrant Advisory Council has once again fallen on financial hard times, and will be forced to vacate its downtown office on Monday unless it receives an influx of cash. […] RIAC, as it’s known, was established in 1983 and provides a wide range of assistance to refugees and immigrants who come to Newfoundland and Labrador from around the world. It depends on various government subsidies and charitable donations to maintain its office at 204 Water Street, and to hire employees.

The first thing the government should do is distinguish between misrepresentations made without a person’s knowledge, deliberate misrepresentations that are inconsequential and deliberate misrepresentations done to intentionally defraud the system. Individuals who do not know a misrepresentation has been made should not be penalized.

Mark Ward, executive director of the Newfoundland International Student Education Program, said he read about the organization’s plight in an article posted on CBC’s website Saturday morning. He decided to pay it forward and delivered a $2,000 cheque to RIAC Executive Director Jose Rivera Saturday afternoon.
