The issue of family reunification is currently before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration. Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship John McCallum has appeared before it and pledged to make changes. For example, he promised to raise the maximum age for dependent children to under 22, recognizing that persons in post-secondary education may still need support from their families and can contribute positively to the Canadian economy. He also committed to eliminate the conditional permanent residence measure for spouses, recognizing that spouses may be subject to exploitation and abuse if their partners can threaten to take their status away during the conditional period.

Music programs have emerged as a valuable tool to help integrate refugees, especially children, into their new Canadian surroundings. They have the potential to help youth overcome the emotional, linguistic, academic and social challenges of adjusting to their new home. Fei Tang founded the Nai Syrian Children’s Choir in Toronto last spring while she worked at CultureLink, a settlement agency. The choir has a performance planned at the House of Commons later this year, says Tang. “Music is very important for the healing process,” she says, recounting how music helped her adjust to life in Canada after she arrived from China 16 years ago.

Sharbat Gula, who grew up in a refugee camp and is now in her 40s, is accused of having a forged Pakistani identity card.
