A round-table discussion and forum on migrant workers’ rights Tuesday evening topped off a march and rally from the local MP’s constituency office into downtown Cobourg earlier in the afternoon. The round table event, co-sponsored by the Northumberland Community Legal Centre and Horizons of Friendship, comes on the heels of about 75 recommendations being made last week to the federal committee reviewing the Temporary Foreign Workers program, and an on-going review of the provincial Employment Standards Act.

The Guardian – Canadians are Embracing Syrian Refugees. Why Can’t We?

This is a country where politicians tried to outbid one another during the last federal election with pledges to resettle Syrian refugees. It’s a country in which no political party has an anti-immigration platform. And it’s a country where the government, after fulfilling its promise to welcome 25,000 Syrians, was forced to extend the program after protests from would-be sponsors who’d already raised hundreds of thousands of dollars and signed leases for homes.

With more than 900 refugees set to arrive in Manitoba before the end of December, Rita Chahal is worried about where they will live. Chahal is the executive director of the Manitoba Interfaith Immigration Council that runs Welcome Place. […] A spokesperson for the Manitoba government said there are ongoing conversations about providing additional rent subsidies to refugees but cautioned the province faces “serious fiscal constraints.”

Global News – Senate Looking to Change Controversial Citizenship Law

The Senate could come to the rescue of Canadians who are being stripped of their citizenship without a hearing. Independent Sen.
