Reuters – Canada says New Border Accord with China will Speed Deportations

An agreement signed between Canada’s border agency and China will result in the faster deportation of Chinese citizens deemed inadmissible by Canadian authorities, a Liberal government spokesman said on Sunday. The deal will allow Chinese officials to travel to Canada to interview Chinese citizens considered inadmissible, with the aim of verifying their identities and documents, said Scott Bardsley, press secretary to Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale. Bardsley said the verification process could otherwise take a long time and had often delayed deportations.

CBC – French President Vows to Shut Down Unacceptable Migrant Camp

French President François Hollande on Saturday confirmed plans to close the squalid Calais migrant camp known as “the Jungle,” saying he hopes authorities can relocate as many as 9,000 migrants to reception centres across France in the coming weeks. Hollande, visiting one of France’s 164 migrant reception centres in the central city of Tours, said conditions in the Calais camp are “not acceptable” and “extremely difficult,” especially for those who fled war to get there.
