The Seasonal Agricultural Worker Programme (SAWP) […] allows Canadian employers to hire temporary farm workers from Mexico and 11 countries in the Caribbean for up to eight months each year. The programme began in 1966 with Canada bringing more than 260 Jamaican workers to Ontario to pick apples amid a shortage of local workers. Jobs must be in the agricultural sector, and workers must have prior farming experience.
Toronto Star – Ottawa Urged to Grant Permanent Status to Migrant Workers Upon Arrival
There are currently some 100,000 temporary foreign workers with valid work permits in Canada, the largest number in Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada said 8,810 temporary foreign workers transitioned to permanent residency in 2014, the latest statistics available, but three-quarters of those were high-skilled workers.

Seventy-five percent of Syrian refugees to Canada are under the age of 18. Zeina Adra, a school settlement worker for the Peel District School Board, works directly with Syrian refugee students, many of whom have come from rural areas and refugee camps in Jordan and Turkey. “Many kids have been out of school for a long time,” says Adra. “We’re trying to help close that gap by ensuring students enter the grade level according to their age so that they’re not set back from the time they’ve missed in school.”
