Toronto Star – Canadians Favour Screening Would-Be Immigrants for “Anti-Canadian” Values, Poll Shows

Conservative MP Kellie Leitch, a candidate in her party’s leadership contest, has floated the idea of screening newcomers for their attitudes on intolerance toward other religions, cultures and sexual orientations and reluctance to embrace Canadian freedoms. A new Forum Research Inc. poll for the Star shows that Leitch may be tapping into an idea that Canadians favour with 67 per cent saying immigrants should indeed be screened for “anti-Canadian values.”

Ottawa Citizen – Career Track: Professor Spearheads Back-To-Work Program for Refugees

Experience taught Sawsan Abdul-Majid that when it came to landing a job that matched her education, a newcomer needs determination, opportunity and a network. […] In June, Abdul-Majid launched a pilot project called Advancing New Canadian Women in Technology with the help of the university’s Career Development Centre and 11 volunteers, who taught courses in entrepreneurship, resumé writing and interview skills. The program unfolded in three phases — intake, on-campus training and a work-related co-op placement. The campus portion of the program, which ran over the summer, attracted 24 initial participants, not all engineers, or women or Syrians.

Toronto Star – Greece Rejects Return to Pre-Crisis Migration Rules

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras hosted leaders of Europe’s Mediterranean countries Friday as his government rejected a return to European Union immigration rules that existed before last year’s crisis. Friday’s talks are in preparation for next week’s informal EU leaders’ summit in Bratislava, Slovakia, as the bloc remains rattled by Britain’s referendum vote to leave the EU and recent gains for the nationalist vote in Germany.

Le Monde – Allemagne : la communauté musulmane dénonce une explosion des agressions islamophobes

Une des plus importantes organisations musulmanes d’Allemagne a dénoncé, jeudi 8 septembre, une hausse sans précédent des agressions islamophobes dans le pays, s’inquiétant de voir le racisme s’ancrer dans la société. « Les attaques contre les mosquées se sont multipliées entre 2014 et 2015. Le nombre d’attaques contre les centres de réfugiés grimpe dans des proportions inédites.

Le Devoir – La construction d’un mur antimigrants va démarrer à Calais

Les travaux pour la construction d’un mur à Calais, destiné à empêcher les migrants de grimper sur les camions à destination du Royaume-Uni, vont démarrer prochainement, a déclaré mercredi le ministère britannique de l’Intérieur, dont le pays finance le projet. Le mur de quatre mètres de haut et un kilomètre de long sera construit le long de la route nationale qui conduit au port de Calais.

Radio-Canada – Les étudiants étrangers continuent de choisir le Québec

L’automne dernier, plus de 38 000 étudiants internationaux étaient inscrits dans des programmes universitaires réguliers. On en comptait un peu plus de 30 000 en 2009, ce qui correspond à une augmentation de plus de 25 % en six ans. Ainsi, un étudiant sur huit fréquentant les universités québécoises n’est pas citoyen canadien ni résident permanent.
