The Soldiers of Odin, a European organization that has been dubbed “an extreme anti-refugee group” by the Anti-Defamation League, has begun setting up shop in Canada — but local leaders say they’re not affiliated with white power.  After sparking controversy in Hamilton, Ont., earlier this summer, the group has formed a chapter in Edmonton.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, whose conservative party faces possible defeat in an election in her home state on Sunday, rejected charges by anti-immigrant critics that her government was spending less on Germans due to a large influx of refugees. CBC – Kellie Leitch Defends “Anti-Canadian Values” Survey Question

Conservative leadership candidate Kellie Leitch is defending a contentious survey question from her campaign team that asked supporters what they think about vetting would-be immigrants and refugees for “anti-Canadian values.” The survey made headlines on Thursday, with at least one Conservative strategist calling for her to withdraw from the race. […] During the 2015 federal election campaign, Leitch helped promote a controversial Conservative promise to establish a tip line for so-called “barbaric cultural practices,” aimed at helping the RCMP enforce a law aimed at cracking down on forced marriages and keeping polygamists out of Canada.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the EU had pledged 6 billion euros ($6.7 billion) in support of some 3 million refugees Turkey currently hosts, but has delivered only 183 million euros.

Metro News – Winnipeg Newcomers Reap Benefits of North End Garden

A quaint community garden in Winnipeg’s north end has blossomed into an oasis for newcomers to the city. Since opening in May, the “Garden of Nations” has been a source of fresh, healthy food and companionship for 15 families still adjusting to life in Canada. “It’s a really tough journey for a lot of people,” said Amy Henderson, newcomer program co-ordinator at Food Matters Manitoba. “When they get here they think their troubles are over, but there’s still a lot of adjusting and they have to learn a new language. The support is there at first, but then it dries up after a while and it can be really stressful and hard to afford healthy food.”
