En soi, il n’y a rien de mal à discuter des seuils d’immigration. Tous les pays le font à un moment ou à un autre et ce n’est ni un signe de fermeture ni un signe de rejet. Mais, le sujet étant nécessairement émotif, il importe de le faire en utilisant des faits plutôt que des perceptions et en évitant de se tirer dans le pied avec des slogans plutôt que des solutions.

Toronto Star – Nearly 7,000 Migrants Rescued from Mediterranean in Massive One-Day Operation

More than 6,900 migrants have been rescued from the central Mediterranean, in one of the largest ever single-day operations, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said Tuesday. The Italian coast guard co-ordinated 35 interventions on Monday, intercepting 44 dinghies, eight small wooden boats, one ship with 200 on board and another carrying 704 people, Flavio Di Giacomo, an IOM spokesman in Rome, told DPA.

Toronto Star – Jamaican Man Issuing Rare Challenge to Immigration Detention at Superior Court in Toronto

A Jamaican immigrant with a history of schizophrenia has been held in a maximum-security jail for five years and received what an expert witness called “inadequate” treatment, a court has heard. Alvin Brown, 40, was arrested on September 8, 2011, and has since been detained at three different provincial prisons, despite efforts by border enforcement authorities to obtain a travel document for his deportation, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice was told Tuesday.

Radio-Canada – Les rescapés de Boko Haram meurent maintenant de faim

Les réfugiés manifestent presque quotidiennement depuis une semaine. Des femmes ont ainsi bloqué pendant cinq heures l’autoroute qui relie Maiduguri, la capitale de l’État de Borno, à la ville de Kano en criant que leurs enfants meurent de faim et qu’elles n’ont aucune eau potable alors que le mercure surpasse 40 degrés Celsius.
