Whether or not they’re aware of it, Canadians have a distant personal connection to the migrants who’ve become a major U.S. election issue. In a literal sense, Canada eats the fruits of their labour. Dennis Nuxoll of the Western Growers farming association said of the 400,000 farm workers in California alone, the majority are believed to have falsified work documents.

Nova Scotia post-secondary institutions are hoping a warm welcome will go a long way toward drawing even more international students to the province.  Edunova, a non-profit promoter of the education sector in the province, has set up a booth at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport to welcome students as they arrive to study.

The Tyee – New Guide Created to Combat Islamophobia in Schools

A collection of organizations hopes a new guidebook for educators will help fight Islamophobia and its effect on Muslim children in Canadian classrooms. The National Council of Canadian Muslims, the Islamic Social Services Association and the Canadian Human Rights Commission worked on the guide, which also suggests ways for educators to better support recent refugee children.

Reuters Canada – Migrant Influx Pushes German Population Growth to Highest Since 1992

Germany’s population registered its biggest increase in more than 20 years in 2015, data showed on Friday, as record numbers of migrants entered the country. More than a million people fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East, Africa and beyond flocked to Europe’s most populous nation last year, drawn by Germany’s strong economy, relatively liberal asylum laws and generous system of benefits.

Reuters Canada – Hungary to Build Second Fence on Serbian Border to Keep Out Migrants

Hungary plans to build a second fence on its southern border with Serbia that would enable it to keep out any major new wave of migrants, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Friday. Orban said the new barrier, to be built alongside the existing one, would strengthen defenses to respond if Turkey’s policy on migration changed. If that happened, hundreds of thousands could appear at Hungary’s border, he told public radio.
