The Globe and Mail – Ontario Contributes Additional $1.55-Million to Refugee Supports
Ontario is putting another $1.55-million toward refugee supports, including settlement services, mental health care and programming for students. More than 12,000 Syrian refugees have settled in Ontario since November 2015. The government says it expects to receive more than 20,000 refugees from all over the world this year.The latest funding is in addition to $8.5-million over 2 1/2 years for resettlement and related supports that the province announced last year, and $2-million for immediate overseas relief.

Global News – Migrant Deaths Over Mediterranean Spike as Smuggling Persists: Report
The International Organization for Migration’s Global Migration Data Analysis Center in Berlin said 2,901 people died or disappeared crossing the Mediterranean in the first six months of 2016, a 37 per cent increase over the first six months of last year. Most of the deaths, 2,484, occurred on the so-called Central Mediterranean route from North Africa to Italy, where some 70,000 people crossed in the first half of 2016.
Toronto Star – Trudeau Liberals Tiptoe into Temporary Foreign Workers Minefield: Walkom
If press reports are any guide, the government will use a parliamentary committee report set to be released next month as a template for relaxing the rules around the hiring of temporary foreign workers. That report is still unpublished. But on a recent trip to China, Immigration Minister John McCallum gave some hint as to the government’s thinking, saying Canada still needs temporary foreign workers to solve labour shortages in areas such as fish-processing and meat-packing.
Northumberland News – Syrian Refugee Agricultural Project Launches in Colborne
As many Syrian refugee families near the six-month point since their arrival in Canada, a new project aims to help them find employment. Farmers Feed the World is a pilot project, which will be launched at the end of August at the AgriFood Venture Centre in Colborne, and assist government- and community-sponsored refugees learn how to make a living in agriculture in Ontario, said Orlando Ferro, Quinte Immigration Services executive director.
