Within the five or six years that newcomers usually have to wait to become full-fledged citizens in Canada, they learn how to assess what their life will be like if they commit to this country. This period of engagement seems to be particularly fruitful; it has been to our benefit and will continue to be – as of 2030, Canada’s net population growth will be entirely attributable to immigration. This will make it possible for us to continue to nurture the kind of society we have established: its medical benefits, public education, cultural activities and, of course, infrastructure such as roads and hospitals.

CBC – Nova Scotia Language Schools Worried About Student Visa Changes

The head of an English language school in Halifax is concerned about recent changes to a federal program requiring international students get a second visa before they continue on to university. […] In a statement, spokeswoman Sonia Lesage confirmed changes made in July meant international students must now apply for two study permits — one for the prerequisite language training and another for college or university.

Ottawa Citizen – Davies: Police Need Proactive Training to Police Refugees and Immigrants

Abdirahman Abdi’s death should be a wake-up call to politicians of all political stripes. We need to introduce changes to police training in this province so it addresses the reality that we have to police immigrants and refugees coming to Canda with sensitivity and intelligence. Action today will prevent certain tragedy tomorrow and it’s in our province’s interest to start initiating proactive solutions to address this problem before it’s too late.

Metro News Canada – Canada’s New Passport Rule Catches Dual Citizens by Surprise

Canadian citizens with dual citizenships will soon be allowed to fly into the country only if they have a Canadian passport. The policy will come into effect Sept. 30 as a final phase of Canada’s move to an electronic screening system to step up border security and boost exit control of travellers, including Canadians on government benefits. The upcoming requirement has caught many by surprise calling the practice “discriminatory” against dual citizens and a money grab, and is expected to create havoc as travellers with dual Canadian citizenships may find out only at the last minute when trying to board on a flight.
